OMA in collaboration with A+SL Studios have re-designed the Chestnut Hill Residence. The present property was constructed in 1983 as a “Solar House” with a couple of big windows on the south side and deep set openings in thick exterior insulation a lot more than concrete block. The resulting interior spaces had been dark and cold. Whilst respecting the geometry and energy conserving intent of the original framework, a amazing modern addition requires this family’s residence off the grid.

Description Chestnut Hill Residence by OMA and A+SL Studios
“The interior spaces have been opened up and ceilings heightened. A new master bedroom suite and household space additions give required spaces for the couple and their youthful children. A new passage along the south side connecting the living, dining, kitchen, and home rooms has been produced with a wall of increased performance windows to expose the pastoral internet site with the interior and to flood the rooms with natural light. NFC Licensed veneers and hardwoods applied to cabinetry, floors, walls, and constructed-ins lend warmth and a sense of all-organic supplies to the new residence.
The owners’ establishing household members and passion for green layout and fashion mandated a full reappraisal of the interior spaces and their connection to the net internet site, as nicely as technological upgrades to reinforce the house’s authentic mission and to make an up-to-date sustainability statement.
The resulting scheme leverages the original house’s overhanging eaves to supply passive power conservation: employing a in depth digital model, the overhang dimensions at a variety of spots have been clculated to let penetration of warming sunlight during the winter, when the sun angle is minimal, and to supply shade in the summertime time, when the angle is larger. A geothermal successfully assists heating and air conditioning by pumping heat in and out of the ground as needed. Electrical power conserving techniques oversee lighting, energy, appliances, and networked media. A green roof tempers heating and cooling demands while keeping storm runoff on website.”
