Storm Cottage is positioned on Great Barrier Island, New Zealand and was developed by Fearon Hay Architects.

With the jagged lines of its architecture and the deep black colour of its outer walls, Storm Cottage stands out greatly from its green and rugged surroundings.

Storm Cottage by Fearon Hay Architects:

“Located on the east coast of Amazing Barrier Island – a black rough sawn timber box sits hunting north to the sea.

The dark exterior palette is completed with a layer of perforated metal screens. This operable layer makes it feasible for the moderation of light / air and protection both when occupied and alone. Internally walls and floors are clad with oiled oak boards that offer a warm counter to its robust exterior.

The programme supplies for a pair of symmetrical bedrooms and ensuites set about a central living area.

Care has been made to limit the scale of the constructing and hold a sense of ‘cottage’.

The constructing is off the grid, powered by solar panels independent programs for water collection and remedy.

This is a retreat that offers shelter, warmth and comfort to engage with the wilderness and isolation of the remote setting.”
